Guidance for the Construction Industry

The updated guidance states that any project can proceed if it “involves construction of infrastructure to be dedicated to the City that will expand public infrastructure capacity beyond what is necessary to serve the private construction project.”

Along with these guidelines, the city unveiled a new administrative process to approve construction projects as “essential activities, critical infrastructure, essential business or affordable housing projects.” Projects that fall into these categories will be allowed to continue, and those that are found to not be essential will be asked to stop. The Construction Exemption Review Committee’s project determinations are final with no appeals process. The committee is made up of representatives from the following city departments: Fire, Code, Law, Public Works, Neighborhood Housing, Economic Development, City Building Official, and the Development Services Department.

The shelter-in-place order is in effect until April 13th. We have received confirmation that BOMA, among other stakeholder groups, will work with Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt and Mayor Steve Adler to make recommendations on what happens April 14th and thereafter in order to ensure the safety and stability of all Austinites moving forward during this difficult time. Today, Harris County officials extended their shelter-in-place order to April 30th, and it is expected other Texas counties will follow.
